Protect Your Online Presence
Cyber Smart Week is a yearly event that highlights the significance of online security and motivates New Zealanders to take proactive measures. This year's Cyber Smart Week campaign, which runs from 21 – 27 October 2024, is called The Scamathon. Inspired by the Telethon events of the 70s and 80s, the Scamathon features scammers enthusiastically expressing gratitude for our generous contributions. This entertaining approach illustrates how scammers exploit our goodwill to get us to part with our money. The campaign urges individuals to protect themselves from "donating" to cyber criminals by using long, unique passwords and enabling two-factor authentication.
Mercer will not ask you to provide your password or other personal information, such as your bank account details, via email, text message, or an unsolicited phone call. Mercer customers are encouraged to advise us of any change to their name, address, or any other contact details. This ensures that our communications reach you correctly.
Is your online security up to par? Here are some tips to help you establish safeguards to protect against cyber attacks:
Use long, strong, and unique passwords:
- Create passwords that are lengthy, robust, and distinctive.
- The longer the password, the better: aim for a minimum of 16 characters.
- Consider using a passphrase made up of four or more random words.
- Steer clear of typical patterns and personal details.
- Refrain from using the same password for multiple accounts.
Enable two-factor authentication (‘2FA’):
- 2FA adds an extra layer of security beyond your username and password, helping to protect your online accounts from unauthorised access.
- A typical method of 2FA involves receiving a unique code on your phone, email, or through an app that only you can access.
- 2FA verifies that it is indeed you who is trying to log in to your account.
